Canacona rainstorm: Power supply, agriculture losses pegged at `26L

Agriculture valued at Rs 6 lakh is reported to have been damaged due to the rainstorms which struck many parts of Canacona taluka on Sunday night.  

A team from the agriculture department at Canacona surveyed the affected areas to assess the losses, which have been estimated at Rs 6 lakh.  

According to Canacona Zonal Agriculture Officer Shivram Naikgaunkar, five polyhouses were damaged at Cotigao, while two mango plantations belonging to Madhav Acharya and Bruno Coutinho having local and hybrid varieties of mangoes were also damaged elsewhere in the taluka.  

Naikgaunkar said a few banana plantations and other cash crops also suffered the brunt of the 

rainstorms.  

Meanwhile, Canacona Electricity Assistant Executive Engineer Vinayak Mhalshekar informed that the staff worked overtime throughout Monday to repair and replace the damaged electrical equipment and managed to restore power supply to the entire taluka by 10.30 pm.  

“The losses sustained by electricity department have been estimated at over Rs 20 lakh,” informed Mhalshekar.  

Since Sunday midnight, the Canacona fire services personnel were also on their toes throughout Monday and attended to over 45 

calls.  

Five houses, four vehicles, several electricity poles and agriculture cultivations were damaged, as cyclonic winds accompanied by heavy rains had wreaked havoc in many parts of Canacona Taluka on Sunday night.
